Then and Now: 50 Years of Veteran Experiences

The St. Augustine Art Association is proud to provide a voice and stage for Veterans with a riveting, sometimes raw, emotionally-charged exhibition, entitled Then & Now: 50 Years of Veterans Experiences, on display July 2 through August 22, 2021.

This exhibit demonstrates the healing power of art by showcasing eight individuals who use painting, sculpture, photography, poetry and other creative outlets. These Veterans share their experiences from subtle murmurs of anguish to cries for support and understanding. Then and Now merges St. Augustine’s art and history with today’s global military awareness and experiences, providing both an educational narrative and outreach. During the exhibit, the Art Association will open its gallery for Veterans and military groups to host meetings or workshops, field trips, lectures and other special events.

A focal point of the exhibit will be a replicated five-by-eight-foot holding cell. This is a special “shout out” to American Hero, Army Major (RET) Theodore Gostas, a former POW held in captivity for over five years, four-and-a-half spent in solitary confinement. The cell will be surrounded by a visual narrative of two Vietnam veterans, Gostas and exhibit curator Jerome Domask, supporting each other for over 50 years as Foxhole Buddies after Gostas’ return to active duty.

There are numerous ways for our St. Augustine community to get involved in Veteran support, and this exhibit is just one of those. If this is something you’d be interested in supporting, let us know! Details on the exhibit, artists, and the ways you can get involved, can be found a www.staaa.org/then-and-now-2021 or by contacting the St. Augustine Art Association at (904) 824-2310 or [email protected].

The St. Augustine Art Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization founded in 1924. The Gallery is located at 22 Marine Street in historic downtown.

The Keepers

The Crisp-Ellert Art Museum is happy to welcome back visual artist Cyriaco Lopes and poet Terri Witek to Flagler College for a participatory virtual event on Thursday, April 8 at 5:30pm. This event is a collaboration with the St. Johns County Public Library, in conjunction with National Poetry Month. The event is free and open to the public, and registration is required.

Zoom has become a ubiquitous part of both our personal and professional lives during the course of the pandemic. Through The Keepers, Lopes and Witek will utilize Zoom as an investigation of the gap between images and text, as orchestra, as conversation, as interactive performative work. The artists encourage viewers to participate in the creation of both visual and auditory elements in order to generate a unique art experience on this newly popular platform.

We would appreciate the audience’s participation during this event, and therefore we will request all participants to turn on their cameras (aka share video) and unmute themselves during certain segments of the performance. While full participation is strongly encouraged, we understand that not everyone might feel comfortable showing their faces and lending us their voices, and there will be ample opportunity to participate in the event through the chat function.

The Keepers will be the second time the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum has collaborated with Lopes and Witek, and the fifth time working with Witek and her other collaborators. In 2015 we presented Lopes and Witek’s exhibition Currents/Correntes. In 2016 we hosted visual artist Matt Roberts and Witek for their interactive, multiple site-specific digital project Dream Garden. In 2017, we invited Roberts and Witek back to Flagler College who, alongside Denke Chen, performed Implements for Removing Foreign Bodies.

Plein Air Quick Draw Competition

On Saturday, April 24, starting at 11:00am, Plein Air artists will spread out around the Lightner Museum gardens and courtyard for a Quick Draw. Artists, in competition with their peers, will have just two hours to complete a painting. Once the two hours are up, a judge will award three artists for their quick skills.

Art lovers are invited to cheer on the artists and watch their paintings come to life as they race to the finish! Artwork will be for sale through the St. Augustine Art Association, located at 22 Marine Street in historic downtown.

For complete details on the Paint Out and Quick Draw, visit www.staaa.org/pleinair or call (904) 824-2310.

5th Annual St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out

Artists and Art lovers! The St. Augustine Art Association invites you to participate in the community-wide 5th Annual St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out in the nation’s oldest city, happening April 22-25, 2021.

This event, a nod to St. Augustine’s art history, celebrates the town’s architectural and coastal beauty through the time-honored tradition of painting en plein air. In coordination with the Lightner Museum, Plein Air artists will be painting locations found in the artwork from their exhibit, St. Augustine in a New Light: American Impressionism from the Collection of the Lightner Museum, which opens April 8. For a complete list of locations to find the artists painting, visit staaa.org/pleinair.

Throughout the Paint Out, works-in-progress and finished works will be on display and for sale in the St. Augustine Art Association Wet Room. All art sales benefit the artists and programming of the St. Augustine Art Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1924.
