Curator’s Tour: Retail Therapy in the 19th Century

May 2, 2018 @ 10:00 am
Free

Lightner Museum Curator Barry Myers conducts tours featuring unique and special treasures of the Museum. May’s tour will be held on the 2nd at 10am and offer guests an intimate encounter with a select few of the Lightner’s eclectic relics.

Shopping was alive and robust during the Victorian era. The Lightner Museum, which was formerly the Alcazar Hotel built by Henry Flagler in 1888, was surrounded by interesting shops. Jewelry, high-end souvenirs, and dress shops lined the first-floor courtyard space of the Alcazar. May’s topic, Retail Therapy in the 19th Century, will delve into the shopping trends of the day right here in St. Augustine as well as the rise of department stores and big retail establishments in America.

The tour will begin in the front lobby of the museum at 10am.
