Brown Bag Lunch – Scott Grant: 1942 Nazi U-Boat Attack on the SS Gulfamerica off the Coast of Jacksonville

June 12, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Free

Last month a new monument was erected in Jacksonville Beach commemorating the tragic death of 19 men on the SS Gulfamerica, a tanker attacked by Nazi U-Boats in 1942. Local historian, Scott Grant, will be at the Main Library presenting on the horrifying attack that happened so close to Jacksonville Beach that the explosion was seen from St. Augustine to St. Mary’s, Georgia.

Grant holds a degree in History and Economics from Cornell University and uses his vast knowledge of local history to share the details of the night the SS Gulfamerica was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. His presentations inspired the Ponte Vedra and Neptune Beach chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to fund the placement of a memorial commemorating these 19 men. He is also the president and CEO of Standfast Asset Management, LLC.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine.  For additional information, please call the Main Library at 904.827.6940.
