Concerti Dipinto: Artworks by David Ouellette

This exhibition of paintings is a visual expression of the human experience, finding inspiration in the tangible world, the ethereal realm of time and the potential of the future, through chance, or fate. The abstract forms, colors, textures and their relationships in the composition of these works is much like music, giving more of a sensation than a description. So the thought arose is that this presentation is a collection of painted concertos, or Concerti Dipinto.

David Ouellette received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Arts in Painting from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He taught at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, while exhibiting in the metropolitan Detroit area. David Ouellette moved to St. Augustine in 1981, and continued his career as an artist and professor of Fine Art at the Florida School of the Arts through his twenty-six year tenure. He is currently teaching Art History at the Flagler College ACE program.

Butterfield Garage’s January Feature Artist Mike Fitzpatrick, fishes and paints with equal enthusiasm!

Tuesday January 5, 2021 Fitz will be in the gallery from 11-5pm painting and discussing his vibrant marine life paintings.

Mike has spent his life on the water, most of it with a fishing rod in hand. He grew up in South Florida where he could be found fishing from the beaches or piers, in canals and Intracoastal, off shore or in the Bahamas. When he became a ‘Florida Gator’ he added inland lakes, rivers, creeks and roommates’ aquariums to his list of favorite fishing spots!

After graduating from UF, he became a USCG Licensed Boat Captain, and spent the next 30 plus years running and maintaining private pleasure and tournament sport fishing boats from Cape Cod to San Salvador and all over the Gulf of Mexico. He painted marine life off and on over the years for family and friends or to donate as awards for fishing tournaments, and in 2017 he let his hidden artistic talent out of the fish box for everyone to enjoy! He is now fulfilling his life long desire to paint professionally, and has created dozens of “Fitz Originals”, some complimented by his own unique handcrafted wooden frames. In vibrant colors, his self taught and evolving style depicts the beauty and energy of sea life. Mike’s enthusiasm is infectious, and his paintings reflect his great love for both painting and the underwater life in the sea.

Mike’s paintings are well known around town and as a member of Butterfield Garage, his work is regularly on display, so stop in to check it out!

La Vie En Bleu: The Life & Art of Marguerite Castaing

Born in 1900 in southern France to a family of painters, Marguerite Castaing had a long career as an artist. At 16 she became a member of the French Salon where she exhibited for over two decades. While living in Paris, she studied under renowned artists Paul Albert Laurens and Pierre Bonnard, and she rubbed shoulders with influential writers, collectors, and critics like Pulitzer Prize winner Louis Bromfield. Marguerite’s work, Impressionistic in style, elicits passion and precision. The artist was inspired by the people and places that surrounded her, from family and friends to the rolling landscapes of southern France, and eventually the colorful seasons of New England. On display for the first time in over a decade, this exhibition of her work showcases over 80 drawings, paintings and pastels detailing her life as a passionate female artist throughout the 20th Century.

Butterfield Garage Invitational – October 2020

October is the inaugural BUTTERFIELD GARAGE INVITATIONAL. This year, many of the member artists have invited artists they admire, resulting in a diverse mix of seasoned artists in the community, family members who are artists, and newcomers who are beginning to make their mark. During this month long event, each invited artist will be available in the gallery to talk about their work with discussions of why they were chosen.
