Dee is highly recognized for her diverse skills as an artist. An Artist Talk, First Friday September 6, at 6pm is an opportunity to hear Dee’s talk about her processes.

Dee Roberts goal as an artist is to catch the spirit of what she sees, in abstract form as well as through naturalistic wildlife drawings. And catch it she does, regardless of the medium. She works with pastels, watercolor, collage and acrylic, garnering many top awards around Florida and Georgia with all of them. Dee consistently surprises the viewer with the strength and confidence of her work. With minimal brushstrokes her subjects come to life, seemingly ready to jump off the canvas.

In Jacksonville, Dee had a two person show at the Cummer and has art in the permanent collections of the University of North Florida and St Johns Country Day School, and AT & T. Her work has been included in many juried shows at Jacksonville University, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the University of North Florida, the Karpeles Museum, the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and the Jacksonville Art Museum . She was included in an international exhibit held by the National Watercolor Society and the International Collage Society. She has received signature status with the Florida Watercolor Society. Dee has been awarded many prizes in shows at the St. Augustine Art Association as well as receiving special awards at their annual Honors Show: the Brian Wolfe Award for best painting, the Ann James Prize for Best Pastel Portrait, and Best in show.

This year Dee received the prestigious Carl Steinsieck Award in St Augustine’s Figure show. She enjoys participating in the Art Guild of Orange Park, the Society of Mixed Media Artists and the Jacksonville Watercolor Society. Dee was part of an Abstract Show at the Jacksonville International Airport in 2017 and is currently in a three person show at Southlight Gallery is Jacksonville. Roberts has had notable solo shows at various galleries as well as St Johns Country Day School and the Thrasher Horne Center for the Performing Arts.

Dee was born in Pennsylvania and received a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. After she married and moved to Florida she continued to study, taking courses with Louise Freshman Brown and workshops with Mary Whyte, Mort Solhberg and George James.

Annual Fine Art Garage Sale at Butterfield Gallery in August

The Annual Butterfield Garage “Garage Sale” opens on First Friday, August 2 and will continue throughout the month. This year the sale will be bigger and better than ever! 32 local artists offer high octane art at discounted prices.
Butterfield Garage is home to many of St. Augustine highly collected local artists. Member artists bring in their older work, art with slightly damaged frames, experimental work that has never been shown and even works of other artists from their own private collections… on display at Butterfield at “garage sale” prices. With a wide variety of art mediums, including paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, textiles, glass, jewelry and more, This is always a fun time and a great opportunity to find some real bargains….no early birds!

From Asia to the Americas: the Art of Jean Wagner Troemel

Take an extraordinary journey through the art and travels of Jean Wagner Troemel! Selections include original oils, watercolors, alkyds, and mono prints representing Jean’s travels and adaptations of artistic movements. All artwork in the exhibition will be offered for sale with proceeds supporting the St. Augustine Art Association Jean Wagner Troemel Award in perpetuity. The exhibit will be on display at the St. Augustine Art Association starting July 20th, with an Art Auction ($ reservations required) and running through August 25, 2019.

About the Artist
Born in Alma, Michigan in 1921, Jean Wagner Troemel was a versatile and prolific artist whose prized works are included in collections worldwide. She specialized in landscapes and also produced over 600 portraits, many of historical figures. Troemel was an honored Fellow of the Royal Society of Art, London. Her works were shown in prestigious museums across the U.S. and throughout Florida, including the Mennello Museum of American Art, a subsidiary of the Smithsonian, which purchased five of her paintings in 2007. She was included in the World’s Who’s Who of Women and The Directory of American Portrait Artists.
A champion of the arts, Troemel founded the Winter Haven Ridge Art Association in 1950, the PAStA Art Gallery in St. Augustine, and served on the Florida Arts Group Board (FLAG). She spearheaded St. Augustine’s First Friday Art Walks and funded the Best in Show Award that continues to be presented monthly at the St. Augustine Art Association. Jean Wagner Troemel passed away on January 18, 2018, leaving behind an enduring and inspiring legacy of art.
