SUMMARY:Friends of the Main Library Brown Bag Lunch – William and Nancy DuVal: Florida Pioneers – A reenactment with David Fussell and Kathy Kniery
DESCRIPTION:Florida Storytellers and reenactors David Fussell and Kathy Kniery will bring to life William P. DuVal and his wife Nancy through a series of stories. DuVal was the first territorial governor of Florida\, succeeding Andrew Jackson\, the military governor. William DuVal was born at Mount Comfort\, Va.\, in 1784. At the age of 14\, he left home for the Kentucky frontier\, settling in Bardstown to study law. In 1822 he moved to Florida\, where he was appointed a territorial judge. He served about a month at St. Augustine before President James Monroe appointed him governor of the Florida territory. He later was reappointed by Presidents Adams and Jackson. DuVal’s administration was noted for its peaceful relations with Florida’s Indians and for the establishment of Tallahassee as the territorial capital. (Florida Department of State.) \nDavid Fussell is a fifth generation Florida Cracker who tells yarns and rhythms of Cracker life through personal experiences and learned lore of Florida’s past. Kathy Kniery spent 30 years as library/media specialist in the Midwest and has retired to St. Augustine. She’s excited to now be able to focus on her favorite part of her former career – storytelling! \nThis program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. For additional information\, please call the Main Library at 904.827.6940.
