But little is widely known about the enigmatic artist’s life and personality. Featuring over fifty original works by Degas\, The Lightner Museum offers unique insights into Degas’ inner world and the opportunity to see rarely exhibited works from the private collection of curator Robert Flynn Johnson. \nEdgar Degas: The Private Impressionist is on view at the Lightner from April 12 – June 16\, 2019. Our limited-engagement showing is free for museum members or for $5 above the price of museum admission. DESCRIPTION:Butterfield Garage May Feature Artist Laura O’Neal Presents STAND TALL\, An Artist Talk\, First Friday May 3\, at 6pm is an opportunity to hear about Laura’s process\, as she takes the viewer beyond the surface imagery to the intention within. \nLaura has been an artist with Butterfield Garage since 2011. Prose and lyrics often accompany her colorful whimsical paintings. Her art is expressive\, and reflect her growth as a person and an artist. There is a meaning and depth to discover beyond the surface. \n“STAND TALL”\, the title of her exhibit\, is intended to “… inspire the viewer to think about their connection to the Earth and of being grounded; happy where you are in this present moment. Then\, to encourage the viewer to lift heads high and seek to align themselves with that which is higher and greater. Lastly\, to receive that magic. I hope you smile!” \nLaura says “I have always written prose and lyrics as a way to inspire the visual. The words I write\, however\, have become much more valuable over the last couple of years.” “My word-swirl forms the energy-body of the piece. Words make their way into the background and sometimes the foreground. I believe words are very powerful and can even have the ability to co-create. Sometimes those words in your head are best left in the background. Through obscuring the negative dialogue\, a space (in the head as well as the canvas) can be cleared so that a vibrant LIFE can emerge\, rich in color! \nMy pieces sometimes seem “busy” because I sense the energy that is happening all around us on so many levels. The thing I like most about my work is its duplicity. At first the viewer may notice the whimsical nature and the bright colors. Sometimes a patron may take the step further; to actually read the poetry and then understand that this seemingly fun little piece actually has something profound to state. \nI have enjoyed playing around with my new creations and their exaggerated lengths. As an artist\, we spend chunks of time in solitude\, so these characters have actually come to life for me\, and have provided me wonderful\, humorous company. These pieces represent being grounded; with feet on the Earth and being “down to Earth” while traveling along on that lofty path of ASCENSION.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Ever wonder about the old brick building next to the Main Library and the carousel? Come learn about its history as the city’s first water works pumping station\, as well as recent construction work undertaken to stabilize\, rehabilitate\, and restore significant building features. Jenny Wolfe\, the Historic Preservation Officer for the City of St. Augustine\, will give a presentation on this 1898 building at the Main Library and then guide attendees on a tour of the building. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for the tour as the Waterworks building is still under construction and is not air conditioned. \nConstruction work has been partially funded by Florida Bureau of Historic Preservation grants with matching funds provided by the City of St. Augustine as the property owner. Additional grant funds are being sought to continue work while the City considers potential future uses for the building. DESCRIPTION:Butterfield Garage May Feature Artist Laura O’Neal Presents STAND TALL\, An Artist Talk\, First Friday May 3\, at 6pm is an opportunity to hear about Laura’s process\, as she takes the viewer beyond the surface imagery to the intention within. \nLaura has been an artist with Butterfield Garage since 2011. Prose and lyrics often accompany her colorful whimsical paintings. Her art is expressive\, and reflect her growth as a person and an artist. There is a meaning and depth to discover beyond the surface. \n“STAND TALL”\, the title of her exhibit\, is intended to “… inspire the viewer to think about their connection to the Earth and of being grounded; happy where you are in this present moment. Then\, to encourage the viewer to lift heads high and seek to align themselves with that which is higher and greater. Lastly\, to receive that magic. I hope you smile!” \nLaura says “I have always written prose and lyrics as a way to inspire the visual. The words I write\, however\, have become much more valuable over the last couple of years.” “My word-swirl forms the energy-body of the piece. Words make their way into the background and sometimes the foreground. I believe words are very powerful and can even have the ability to co-create. Sometimes those words in your head are best left in the background. Through obscuring the negative dialogue\, a space (in the head as well as the canvas) can be cleared so that a vibrant LIFE can emerge\, rich in color! \nMy pieces sometimes seem “busy” because I sense the energy that is happening all around us on so many levels. The thing I like most about my work is its duplicity. At first the viewer may notice the whimsical nature and the bright colors. Sometimes a patron may take the step further; to actually read the poetry and then understand that this seemingly fun little piece actually has something profound to state. \nI have enjoyed playing around with my new creations and their exaggerated lengths. As an artist\, we spend chunks of time in solitude\, so these characters have actually come to life for me\, and have provided me wonderful\, humorous company. These pieces represent being grounded; with feet on the Earth and being “down to Earth” while traveling along on that lofty path of ASCENSION.

DESCRIPTION:The North Florida Women’s Chorale will present a free concert\, Much Ado About Women\, on May 4\, Saturday\, at Noon\, at Ancient City Baptist Church\, 27 Sevilla Street\, St Augustine\, FL 32084. A second performance will be held on Sunday\, May 5\, at 4 pm at Palms Presbyterian Church\, 3410 3rd Street South\, Jacksonville Beach\, FL 32250.\nThis wonderful 35-plus member women’s choir prepares its 27th year-end concert with songs by and about women. Titled\, “Much Ado About Women”\, NFWC sings rich\, moving songs of hope and encouragement for women’s roles in society. Selections include\, “March of the Women”\, a nod to the suffragette movement; a Shaker worker song\, “I Will Be a Child of Peace”; and songs supporting family and each other with “Music in My Mother’s House” and “Rise Up”\, respectively.\nThe chorus is celebrating its 13th year with director Kerry Fradley\, accompanied by Kathleen Vande Berg as collaborative pianist. Kerry is also the founder and director of the St. Augustine Youth Chorus\, chorus master for First Coast Opera\, and a recipient of the ROWITA Award. Kathleen is currently organist/choir director at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church\, director of the St. Augustine Chamber Singers\, and ROWITA Award recipient\, as well.\nIn addition to singing\, the NFWC also selects a community service project for each concert theme.
