But little is widely known about the enigmatic artist’s life and personality. Featuring over fifty original works by Degas\, The Lightner Museum offers unique insights into Degas’ inner world and the opportunity to see rarely exhibited works from the private collection of curator Robert Flynn Johnson. \nEdgar Degas: The Private Impressionist is on view at the Lightner from April 12 – June 16\, 2019. Our limited-engagement showing is free for museum members or for $5 above the price of museum admission. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch – Scott Grant: 1942 Nazi U-Boat Attack on the SS Gulfamerica off the Coast of Jacksonville
DESCRIPTION:Last month a new monument was erected in Jacksonville Beach commemorating the tragic death of 19 men on the SS Gulfamerica\, a tanker attacked by Nazi U-Boats in 1942. Local historian\, Scott Grant\, will be at the Main Library presenting on the horrifying attack that happened so close to Jacksonville Beach that the explosion was seen from St. Augustine to St. Mary’s\, Georgia. \nGrant holds a degree in History and Economics from Cornell University and uses his vast knowledge of local history to share the details of the night the SS Gulfamerica was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. His presentations inspired the Ponte Vedra and Neptune Beach chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to fund the placement of a memorial commemorating these 19 men. He is also the president and CEO of Standfast Asset Management\, LLC. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine.  For additional information\, please call the Main Library at 904.827.6940.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday evenings are special for tourists and locals alike as the St Augustine Beach Civic Association presents the 17th season of Music by the Sea. This free\, family friend event happens each Wednesday evening starting on May 7th and continues through September 11th. 19 weeks\, 19 different bands featuring music from multiple genres of music including Jazz\, Blues\, Classic Rock\, Country\, Disco\, Pop and Latin too. The event runs from 6 until 9 PM each Wednesday evening at the St Johns County Pier Park in the Pavilion. Each week a different local eatery provides optional food service with dinners priced at $10 or less. Patrons should bring their own blanket or beach chairs\, pack a cooler and get ready to dance. The calendar is a success\, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. \nRegular tickets are $26 for adults; $24 for ages 62 and older; $20 for military and students; and $10 student rush for students with I.D.\, available 30 minutes prior to curtain for available seats. Preview Night is the first Thursday of each production and is $15 per ticket. Terrific Tuesday\, the Tuesday after opening weekend only offers a special on 2 tickets for $30. DESCRIPTION:The reenactment of the Battle of Bloody Mose is back for another year. This will be the 277th anniversary of the battle\, and the event will be presented by Florida Living History\, Inc.\, and the Fort Mose Historical Society on Saturday\, June 15\, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Fort Mose\, just north of historic St. Augustine. \nVisitors can participate in the commemoration of the battle and enjoy reenactments of the 1740 battle. Reenactments of the battle itself will take place at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. Other activities will take place throughout the day such as musket demonstrations\, colonial Florida craft-making stations\, blacksmithing\, 18th-century foods\, finger weaving\, and pine needle basket weaving.
