SUMMARY:Heist at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:THE CARAVACA CROSS HAS BEEN STOLEN!!! \nIn 2002\, during an archaeological investigation of the property of the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum\, a fascinating discovery was made…a 17th century caravaca cross. The caravaca cross was first produced to celebrate the end of the Black Death in Europe. \nBelieved to be the only example of a caravaca cross to be found in North America\, the cross is kept under lock and key\, but it has disappeared! \nAuthorities have been called\, and they believe the culprit and the cross are still somewhere within the museum. Help us discover the identity of the thief\, in which room\, and where in the room\, they hid the cross. \nStarting tonight at 6:30pm\, and every Thursday\, Friday and Saturday nights going forward\, we will be hosting Heist at the Museum. Admission is $20 per person\, and the game will last approximately ninety minutes. \nThis is the perfect event for birthday parties\, bachelor/bachelorette parties\, or just something different for a fun night out in downtown St. Augustine.\nFor more information\, or to pre-purchase Heist in the Museum tickets\, stop by or call or gift shop at (904)342-8887.

SUMMARY:Midnight in the Garden of Indigo Batik Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. She has been included in numerous regional shows and her batiks grace the homes of many collectors around the country. She teaches her technique in classes at The Bascom Center for the Arts in Highlands NC\, as well as locally. \nA short history of indigo and its role in St. Augustines past\, plus A hands on demonstration of batik and the indigo dying process will be presented Saturday Feb 22\, at Butterfield Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lucero
DESCRIPTION:Lucero has long been admired in their hometown of Memphis\, where they have hosted “The Lucero Family Block Party” every spring for a number of years. At the 2018 Block Party they celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band\, with the city’s Mayor Jim Strickland officially declaring it “Lucero Day.” \nThe group found their name in a Spanish/English dictionary. “Lucero” is variously translated as “bright star” or “morning star.” None of them can speak Spanish. \nIt’s been two decades since original members Ben Nichols\, Brian Venable\, Roy Berry\, and John C. Stubblefield (keyboardist Rick Steff joined in 2006) started playing shows in Memphis. The band’s first show was April 13\, 1998 at a warehouse space across the street from what is now the National Civil Rights Museum\, the infamous Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. Their first set was six songs played to about six people. in Colorado. \nThe band’s ninth studio album\, Among the Ghosts\, is their first for noted Nashville indie label Thirty Tigers. It was recorded and co-produced with Grammy-winning engineer/producer and Memphis native Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell\, Margo Price\, Drive by Truckers) at the historic Sam Phillips Recording Service\, the studio built by the legendary producer after outgrowing his Memphis Recording Service/Sun Studio. \nRecorded primarily live as a five-piece\, Among the Ghosts eschews the Stax-inspired horns and Jerry Lee Lewis-style boogie piano featured on some of the band’s past recordings for a streamlined rock & roll sound that pays homage to their seminal influences as it seeks to push that legacy into the future. For a band who carried the torch of the alt-country movement back in the 90’s and helped pave the way for what is now called Americana\, Lucero have re-discovered what inspired them in the first place. The sound is more their own and at the same time not exactly like anything they’ve done before. This is a band settling into their craft. The 10-song disc’s title is both a tribute to the spirits which roam the streets of their fabled city\, as well as the hard road the determinedly independent band set out on 20 years ago. The band played around 200 shows per year for many of those 20 years.

The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art.

Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30pm. The Sunday show is at 2pm. \nTickets are only $15 and $10 student tickets are available with ID at the door.
