SUMMARY:The Giver
DESCRIPTION:Flagler College’s Theatre Arts students will perform a Theater for Young Adults classic coming of age story from the Lois Lowry novel\, “The Giver.” The production will be shown from April 10 to 13 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m. in the Lewis Auditorium at 14 Granada Street. It is directed by Visiting Assistant Professor Leah Page. \n“The Giver” is a coming-of-age story where the main character\, Jonas\, comes to realize the life he has known is not what he thought it was; it’s intended for young adult audiences. However\, because of the complexities of adolescence and growing up\, this story is one that can be enjoyed by all. \nPage highlighted the process of bringing the production from beloved novel to stage\, focusing on her decision to cast a female Giver in such an archetypal role: she strove to juxtapose the “Giver” character’s sincerity and support against the other adult female characters who may be seen as cold and distant. Page also spoke of her goal to focus on the evolution of the relationship between the Giver and Jonas. \nShe also foresees theater for young adults becoming more commonplace in a typical Flagler theater season\, even if only every other year. In particular\, Page said that students were naturally excited to work on this show\, as it was widely read throughout middle schools across the country. \nThe book is a 1994 Newbery award winner and also adapted for the screen in the film of the same name starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. \nThe show is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock\, Ill. Tickets are $15 general admission\, available online at tickets.flagler.edu. Tickets may also be purchased directly at the box office beginning April 8\, Monday through Friday\, 12-5 p.m.\, and one hour prior to curtain. Flagler faculty\, staff\, their immediate family\, and Flagler students\, may obtain one free ticket directly from the box office. Non-Flagler students may purchase a discounted $5 ticket with their identification.
