DESCRIPTION:The454th-anniversary commemoration of Menéndez’ Landing\, Founders’ Day and First Thanksgiving event will be held on September 7\, 2019. This historical event is celebrated in St. Augustine each year on the Saturday closest to Sept. 8. The celebration starts at the Mission Nombre de Dios with a re-enactment of the landing of Pedro Menendez and his crew and a Catholic Mass of thanks and celebration. After the Mass\, re-enactors travel from the Mission to the Fountain of Youth\, the original location of Menendez’ first settlement of St. Augustine.  \nAdmission tickets for the Fountain of Youth are $15. \n

She will be on-hand crafting her Strawberry Rosé Punch at cocktail classes throughout the evening. \nThe Lightner After Hours event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch – Scott Grant: 1942 Nazi U-Boat Attack on the SS Gulfamerica off the Coast of Jacksonville
DESCRIPTION:Last month a new monument was erected in Jacksonville Beach commemorating the tragic death of 19 men on the SS Gulfamerica\, a tanker attacked by Nazi U-Boats in 1942. Local historian\, Scott Grant\, will be at the Main Library presenting on the horrifying attack that happened so close to Jacksonville Beach that the explosion was seen from St. Augustine to St. Mary’s\, Georgia. \nGrant holds a degree in History and Economics from Cornell University and uses his vast knowledge of local history to share the details of the night the SS Gulfamerica was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. His presentations inspired the Ponte Vedra and Neptune Beach chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to fund the placement of a memorial commemorating these 19 men. He is also the president and CEO of Standfast Asset Management\, LLC. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine.  For additional information\, please call the Main Library at 904.827.6940.

DESCRIPTION:Historic Florida Militia will present the 30th annual reenactment of Sir Francis Drake’s raid on old St. Augustine on Saturday\, June 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Drake’s Raid is an annual event that re-creates this historic raid that occurred on June 6\, 1586\, when 2\,000 Englishmen in 23 ships attacked the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine. \nThe re-enactment will include a re-created 16th-century-style military encampment\, featuring drills\, weapon demonstrations and living history interpretations. \nAt 7:00 p.m.\, the reenactment of the sacking and burning of the town will begin at the City Gate and will proceed down St. George Street to end at the Plaza de la Constitución.This event commemorates the temporary abandonment of the city of St. Augustine by Spanish colonial forces. After the town was looted and burned by Drake’s men\, the Spanish returned to rebuild it. \nAdmission to this event is free. However\, regular park admission rates apply for the encampment at the Colonial Quarter. \nFor more information on the reenactment\, visit their website.
