DESCRIPTION:“Confessions of the Corazon” returns to the Corazon Cinema and Cafe with Gabriella Saho as our featured storyteller\, on September 26th. David Fussell will be our special guest host. \nGabriella is a creative service specialist. She recycles\, resales\, repairs\, renovates\, restores\, removes\, invents\, improves and instructs materials into art. \nAccording to his Tale Tellers of St. Augustine bio\, it states: “David Fussell\, a fifth generation Florida Cracker and fifth generation Wiregrass Georgia Cracker\, tells yarns and rhythms of Cracker life through personal experiences and learned lore of Florida’s past. With wit\, wisdom\, humor\, and laughter the Cracker South comes alive; fifty years of storytelling from the front porch.” \nThe event is all ages and is $5 (cash only) for each person. There is room for 10 storytellers each time and it is first come\, first served. Sign up by purchasing one item and there are free refills on most beverages. Sign up at 5:00 p.m. and the stories begin at 5:30 p.m. Each storyteller receives six to eight minutes of stage time. The featured storyteller gets 10 minutes of stage time and 50% of the proceeds from the door. \nAfter each event\, the current featured storyteller draws the name for the following month’s storyteller. \nIf you are an artist\, bring in your works and sell them. The show has been recreated by Riding Master René Gasser\, whose family has trained these horses for seven generations. \nThe Royal Horses of Europe are world-famous for their performances that feature the Lipizzaner Stallions\, the Spanish Andalusian\, and Friesian horses\, as well as the recently added quarter horse. DESCRIPTION:Florida Storytellers and reenactors David Fussell and Kathy Kniery will bring to life William P. DuVal and his wife Nancy through a series of stories. DuVal was the first territorial governor of Florida\, succeeding Andrew Jackson\, the military governor. William DuVal was born at Mount Comfort\, Va.\, in 1784. At the age of 14\, he left home for the Kentucky frontier\, settling in Bardstown to study law. In 1822 he moved to Florida\, where he was appointed a territorial judge. He served about a month at St. Augustine before President James Monroe appointed him governor of the Florida territory. He later was reappointed by Presidents Adams and Jackson. DuVal’s administration was noted for its peaceful relations with Florida’s Indians and for the establishment of Tallahassee as the territorial capital. (Florida Department of State.) \nDavid Fussell is a fifth generation Florida Cracker who tells yarns and rhythms of Cracker life through personal experiences and learned lore of Florida’s past. Kathy Kniery spent 30 years as library/media specialist in the Midwest and has retired to St. Augustine. DESCRIPTION:Last month a new monument was erected in Jacksonville Beach commemorating the tragic death of 19 men on the SS Gulfamerica\, a tanker attacked by Nazi U-Boats in 1942. Local historian\, Scott Grant\, will be at the Main Library presenting on the horrifying attack that happened so close to Jacksonville Beach that the explosion was seen from St. Augustine to St. Mary’s\, Georgia. \nGrant holds a degree in History and Economics from Cornell University and uses his vast knowledge of local history to share the details of the night the SS Gulfamerica was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. His presentations inspired the Ponte Vedra and Neptune Beach chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to fund the placement of a memorial commemorating these 19 men. He is also the president and CEO of Standfast Asset Management\, LLC. \nThis program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Historic Florida Militia will present the 30th annual reenactment of Sir Francis Drake’s raid on old St. Augustine on Saturday\, June 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Drake’s Raid is an annual event that re-creates this historic raid that occurred on June 6\, 1586\, when 2\,000 Englishmen in 23 ships attacked the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine. \nThe re-enactment will include a re-created 16th-century-style military encampment\, featuring drills\, weapon demonstrations and living history interpretations. \nAt 7:00 p.m.\, the reenactment of the sacking and burning of the town will begin at the City Gate and will proceed down St. George Street to end at the Plaza de la Constitución.This event commemorates the temporary abandonment of the city of St. Augustine by Spanish colonial forces. After the town was looted and burned by Drake’s men\, the Spanish returned to rebuild it. \nAdmission to this event is free.
