SUMMARY:Midnight in the Garden of Indigo Batik Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. She has been included in numerous regional shows and her batiks grace the homes of many collectors around the country. She teaches her technique in classes at The Bascom Center for the Arts in Highlands NC\, as well as locally. \nA short history of indigo and its role in St. Augustines past\, plus A hands on demonstration of batik and the indigo dying process will be presented Saturday Feb 22\, at Butterfield Gallery.

SUMMARY:Multidisciplinary Approach to Quantify Behavior: From Fish Locomotion to Stroke Recovery
DESCRIPTION:The next Evenings at Whitney Lecture Series hosted by the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience will be February 13\, 2020\, at 7 p.m. with the program titled “The Human Cell Atlas Project – Mapping the Human Body Cell by Cell”. Gary Bader\, Ph.D.\, Professor at The Donnelly Centre at the University of Toronto\, will be the speaker. This free lecture will be presented at the UF Whitney Laboratory Lohman Auditorium\, 9505 Ocean Shore Boulevard\, in St. Augustine. \nThe human body is made up of trillions of cells of thousands of different types. New technology has opened a new window of discovery on this cellular world. Dr. Bader will share The Human Cell Atlas Project\, a large international scientific effort to create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells – the fundamental units of life – as a basis for both understanding human health and diagnosing\, monitoring\, and treating disease.  \nGary Bader is a Professor at The Donnelly Centre at the University of Toronto and an international leader in the field of Computational Biology\, an interdisciplinary research area that combines biology and computer science.  Dr. Bader’s research team is trying to understand how cells within the healthy human body work and what goes wrong in diseases such as cancer\, with the hope that this information can be used to design new treatments. This research\, for instance\, helped identify a histone methylation inhibitor as the first therapeutic drug candidate for pediatric ependymoma\, a devastating childhood brain cancer.
