DESCRIPTION:Explore and learn about the estuarine habitat of Salt Run and the maritime hammocks as well as the amazing array of wildlife and plants that are indigenous to the various ecosystems of Anastasia State Park as you wander the stunning local shoreline. The two-hour walks starts at the shoreline\, heads up through the dunes\, on the boardwalk over the salt marsh\, and finishes along Salt Run. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars\, a camera\, drinking water\, bug spray\, and sunscreen. \nThe event is free with park admission.

DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. She has been included in numerous regional shows and her batiks grace the homes of many collectors around the country. She teaches her technique in classes at The Bascom Center for the Arts in Highlands NC\, as well as locally. \nA short history of indigo and its role in St. Augustines past\, plus A hands on demonstration of batik and the indigo dying process will be presented Saturday Feb 22\, at Butterfield Gallery.

SUMMARY:Midnight in the Garden of Indigo Batik Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. DESCRIPTION:On Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Flagler Room of Ponce de Leon Hall at Flagler College\, the Woodrow Wilson visiting fellow Julie Lythcott-Haims will give a lecture titled\, “Who Are You? Reflections from Someone Who Wants to Know.” The lecture is free and open to the public. \nLythcott-Haims’ background includes work as a corporate lawyer as well as administration in higher education – a dean at Stanford. \nShe has several books including a New York Times best-seller-turned-TED Talk on helicopter parents: “How to Raise an Adult” with a sequel coming soon for young adults titled\, “How to BE an Adult.” She’s also produced an award-winning and critically-acclaimed book of poetry “Real American: A Memoir.” Her work has been featured in The Atlantic\, Chicago Tribune\, Parents magazine\, “CBS This Morning\,” “The Today Show” and “National Public Radio\,” among others. \nDuring her visit to Flagler\, Lythcott-Haims will visit political science and first year seminar classes\, attend various social activities with faculty and staff\, as well as participate in several events for the Black Student Association. \nLythcott-Haims holds a J.D. from Harvard\, a M.F.A. in writing from California College of the Arts and a bachelor’s from Stanford.

SUMMARY:Midnight in the Garden of Indigo Batik Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. She has been included in numerous regional shows and her batiks grace the homes of many collectors around the country. DESCRIPTION:Join Howard Professor Sonja D. Williams as she discusses the African American struggle for freedom through sacred songs and radio dramas. Williams is the author of Word Warrior: Richard Durham\, Radio and Freedom and a producer of Wade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions\, a Peabody Award winning radio series. The program is free and open to the public. Coffee\, tea and light refreshments will be served. \nThis event is hosted by the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center (LMCC)\, located at 102 ML King Avenue. The LMCC works to preserve\, promote and perpetuate 450 years of African American history and culture in Northeast Florida through the arts\, education\, cultural programs\, live performance\, oral histories and exhibits.
