SUMMARY:Searle’s Sack and Encampment
DESCRIPTION:Searle’s Raid is an annual event that recreates the famous bloody pirate raid on St. Augustine in 1668\, takes place on the first Friday and Saturday of March. Join the Historic Florida Militia in the reenactment of the “1668 Sack of St. Augustine” in our nations’ oldest city. During the day\, a 17th century-style military encampment will be open to the public at the Colonial Quarter and will play host to military drills\, demonstrations\, and living history interpretation. The actual sacking and burning of the town will commence Saturday evening at 4:30pm. The specific route may vary. \nThe procession that commemorates the arrival of the raiding pirates and introduces this annual event will begin at the Colonial Quarter at 4:30pm and will proceed north on St. George Street to the Santo Domingo Redoubt on Orange Street. The Searle’s Sack encampment will take place on the first Saturday from 10am to 4pm at the Colonial Quarter. The reenactment of the battle between the freebooters and the city’s Spanish defenders will take place in St. Augustine’s historic district at 4:30pm on Saturday. The English brigade will head up St. George Street from the Plaza toward the city gates\, and the battle will commence when the English try to invade the Spanish defenders who will be stationed at the Santo Domingo Redoubt off Orange Street across from Potter’s Wax Museum. Living history gets real when living historians demonstrate how the Spanish settlers had to fight off Searle and his pirates. \nEvents in the historic district are free.

Galleries open their doors from 5-9pm\, offering new art exhibits and lively receptions to the public. Start your free self-guided tour at any of the Art Galleries of Saint Augustine galleries. Most galleries are within close walking distance to each other; some are just a short ride away. Hop aboard the free Art Walk trains and trolleys that run throughout downtown. \nFeast on great arts & eats and the sounds of live music—rain or shine! For the late-nighters\, the celebration continues with “after parties” at area clubs and restaurants. Parking locations are shown on the map. Parking after 5pm is free except at the Historic Parking Garage. \nFrom 6-9pm\, Ripley’s Red Sightseeing Trains and The Old Town Trolleys provide free transportation during the Art Walk. The shuttles run every 20-30 minutes on a continuous loop (see map)\, allowing easy access to most of the downtown member galleries. SUMMARY:Midnight in the Garden of Indigo Batik Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. She has been included in numerous regional shows and her batiks grace the homes of many collectors around the country. She teaches her technique in classes at The Bascom Center for the Arts in Highlands NC\, as well as locally. \nA short history of indigo and its role in St. Augustines past\, plus A hands on demonstration of batik and the indigo dying process will be presented Saturday Feb 22\, at Butterfield Gallery.
