DESCRIPTION:The Lightner Museum and the Florida Humanities Council are thrilled to welcome The Palm Beach Post reporter\, Eliot Kleinberg\, as part of the Florida Humanities Speaker Series.  Mr. Kleinberg will discuss how Florida played a far more strategic role in the Civil War than most history books let on. While Florida might be the most “northern” southern state now\, it was the the third to secede\, and very significant during the war. Learn about Florida’s role in the blockade\, its critical battles\, the tragedy of its governor\, and the veterans who founded many Florida cities\, and how some people are still fighting the war.  As well\, find out why the war is the reason Florida has 21 million people! \nMr. Kleinberg\, born in South Florida\, has spent nearly four decades as a reporter\, including more than a quarter-century at The Palm Beach Post\, featuring his weekly local history column\, “Post Time”. \nThis event will be held in the City of St. Augustine’s Alcazar Room\, in the Lightner Courtyard\, beginning at 2:00 pm. Registration is required and can be made online at LightnerMuseum.org or by calling 904-824-2874. Space will be limited. The Alcazar Room is handicap accessible. \nThis program is sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the Florida Department State\, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. SUMMARY:Guided Exploration Hike at GTM Research Reserve
DESCRIPTION:On the first Saturday of every month\, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) hosts a Guided Exploration Hike\, where guests can learn about the cultural history of the Guana Peninsula\, as well as the natural biodiversity of the Reserve. \nA GTM naturalist leads the hike and talks about the peninsula’s 5\,000 years of human history\, including how native peoples made use of the estuarine resources\, what European plantation life was like\, and current efforts to save those resources. \nThe hike is free\, but there is a $3 parking fee.

DESCRIPTION:On the first Friday of every month\, St. Augustine’s art galleries welcome visitors to browse the latest art exhibits and enjoy refreshments and live entertainment at some 30 participating galleries. Galleries will set out food and wine as many artists are on hand to discuss their work. Explore contemporary and traditional in oils\, pastels\, sculpture\, wood\, and more from artists locally and across the country. \nRain or shine\, the event takes place on the first Friday of every month from 5-9pm. Galleries are open throughout downtown and even onto Anastasia Island. \nOld Town Trolleys and Ripley’s Sightseeing Trains provide complimentary shuttle service to most of the galleries\, including the galleries on St. Augustine Beach.
