Barrels For Boobs originated in Flagler County and has moved to beautiful St. Augustine Beach to celebrate the 5 year anniversary on Saturday\, April 6th at the St. John’s County Ocean Pier. \nThe contest is open to all levels of amateur surfing. All ages of men\, women\, collegiate surfers\, groms\, and first timers are encouraged to compete. This 5th annual surf contest and beach festival will support local nonprofit\, Pink Up The Pace\, in their movement to provide breast cancer imaging services to uninsured and underinsured individuals in the area. \nA fun-filled day in the sun\, the event will include an all-day amateur surf contest\, raffles\, engaging beach activities\, music\, local flavors\, and unique vendors. An official after-party will take place just across A1A Beach Blvd. at Café Eleven for live music from St. Augustine local band\, Kapowski\, starting at 8pm. \nSurf divisions include Men’s (All-ages)\, Women’s (All-ages)\, Junior Men’s (18 and under)\, Junior Women’s (18 and under)\, Men’s Longboard\, Women’s Longboard\, and Co-ed Novice. The highly anticipated and free division “Weirdest Thing You Can Surf” division will also debut on St. Augustine Beach. Collegiate surfers can also contribute to an overall team score\, with one school taking home the winning title. Generous sponsor prize packages are available\, and each surfer will walk away with a surf-inspired goodie bag. Surfers can register at Barrelsforboobs.com \nOne in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime along with one in 833 men. Early screenings and detection significantly increase survival rates\, which is why Barrels for Boobs is proud to support St. Augustine-based Pink Up The Pace. DESCRIPTION:On March 28 at 6 p.m. in the Flagler Room on Flagler College’s campus\, Hasan Kwame Jeffries\, Ph.D.\, associate professor at The Ohio State University\, will present to the public “American Amnesia: Why We Hate History and Love Nostalgia.” The event is free. \n“We have been miseducating our students to a criminal extent\,” said Jeffries. \nHe has his bachelor’s in history from Morehouse College and his master’s in American history from Duke University. He also completed his doctoral studies in American history with a concentration in African-American history at Duke University. \nJeffries serves as a guest speaker at various conferences\, on tv programs and in the media as he is considered a topic expert in African-American history and contemporary black politics. He has completed many fellowships including a Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship. \n“We’re not helping students understand the world in which we live\,” he said. He is expected to stress the importance of teaching students how to navigate today’s issues and understand their place in society’s progression forward. \nHis publications include “Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt” and “Stealing Home: Ebbets Field and Black Working Class Life in Post-Civil Rights New York\,” which is a work in progress. \nJeffries is visiting Flagler College at the invitation of the Office of Academic Affairs\, through Kenan Distinguished Professor of History Michael Butler\, Ph.D. \nThis speaking engagement is free and open to the public\, but seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:What does it take to live 6 months of your life hiking the Appalachian Trail? Come to this free presentation by Carolyn (trail name Freckles) to find out what life on the Trail is REALLY like. Part of the discussion will include planning\, hiking gear\, food\, food preparation\, navigation\, trail life\, etc. Questions and discussion will be welcome. Her gear will be on display to view. A discussion about her hike will include the special challenges of hiking for older hikers. There are many things to consider before attempting a thru hike\, and many ways to hike it. Everyone hikes their own hike\, but preparation and determination are key for success. If you’ve been thinking about taking this challenge\, come talk with Freckles! \nCarolyn and her husband took up hiking\, biking\, backpacking\, wilderness canoeing\, and whitewater kayaking. They now live at the midpoint of the Appalachian Trail\, and she is on the trail regularly. Her first of three thru hike attempts was in 2009\, and she was finally successful on her third attempt in 2014! She hiked the entire trail with a seventy four year old woman\, Drag’nfly\, who remains the oldest woman to have thru hiked! Please contact the Main Library at 904.827.6940 for more information.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and St. Augustine
DESCRIPTION:Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings\, the author of the classic The Yearling and known primarily for her relationship with the people of Cross Creek\, Florida\, also had very significant ties to St. Augustine. She bought her cottage in Crescent Beach in 1939\, spending time in that locale in addition to Cross Creek. In 1942 she married Norton Baskin who owned and managed the Castle Warden Hotel in St. Augustine. These and the years that followed in St. Augustine and Crescent Beach were the years of Cross Creek\, Cross Creek Cookery\, the Zelma Cason lawsuit\, World War II\, and The Sojourner. \nBarbara C. Wingo is an historian and attorney. She is the president of the Friends of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm\, Inc. She received her Ph.D. in United States history from Tulane University and worked in the General Counsel’s Office and as an adjunct history professor at the University of Florida for over 30 years. She is a member of the Historic Architectural Review Board of St. Augustine and is a past president of the St. Augustine Historical Society. She currently serves as an officer and as a board member of a number of history\, historic preservation\, law and music-related organizations. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. SUMMARY:St. Patrick’s Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:The first ever recorded St. Patrick’s Day Festival was not in Boston\, not in New York\, not even in Ireland – it was in St. Augustine! And now\, 419 years later\, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is still going strong. This parade follows the bayfront to the Bridge of Lions\, takes a right down Cathedral Place\, and returns to its origin via Cordova Street. The parade is a spectacle of floats\, marching bands\, pipes and drums\, horse-drawn carriages\, military units\, local community groups\, and plenty more. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget!
