SUMMARY:Hands-On Summer Day Camps at Castillo and Fort Matanzas
DESCRIPTION:The National Park Service is offering four five-day sessions of a Hands-on-History and Nature Summer Day Camp at Fort Matanzas and  Castillo de San Marcos. The summer day camp sessions are geared for campers ages 9 to 11. \nThe camp activities will include presentations\, hands-on projects\, games\, and living history demonstrations. The topics covered will range from archaeology and preservation to nature\, Native Americans\, Spanish exploration\, and life in colonial Florida. Activities will include creating textiles\, pottery\, leatherwork\, and more. \nFees for the event listed below: \n$25.00 per child. \nTo register\, contact Mary Sims at (904) 829-6506 ext. 227 (from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday). \n

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch – Scott Grant: 1942 Nazi U-Boat Attack on the SS Gulfamerica off the Coast of Jacksonville
DESCRIPTION:Last month a new monument was erected in Jacksonville Beach commemorating the tragic death of 19 men on the SS Gulfamerica\, a tanker attacked by Nazi U-Boats in 1942. Local historian\, Scott Grant\, will be at the Main Library presenting on the horrifying attack that happened so close to Jacksonville Beach that the explosion was seen from St. Augustine to St. Mary’s\, Georgia. \nGrant holds a degree in History and Economics from Cornell University and uses his vast knowledge of local history to share the details of the night the SS Gulfamerica was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. His presentations inspired the Ponte Vedra and Neptune Beach chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to fund the placement of a memorial commemorating these 19 men. He is also the president and CEO of Standfast Asset Management\, LLC. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine.  For additional information\, please call the Main Library at 904.827.6940.

DESCRIPTION:Join Flagler College art history professor Chris Balaschak for a talk exploring the impact of photography on the Impressionists. As evidenced in our current exhibition Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist\, Degas regularly took and explored the possibilities offered by this new technology.  Professor Balaschak will discuss how Degas use of photography and its influence on his artwork. Tickets are $10 ($5.00 for museum members).
