SUMMARY:Ideas & Images Series: “Florida and Cuba: Five Centuries of Shared History and Culture”
DESCRIPTION:On Oct. 25\, Sherry Johnson\, Ph.D\, professor of history at Florida International University in Miami and research associate at the Historic St. Augustine Research Institute\, will share with the audience the ways in which Florida and Cuba connect. Her presentation\, titled “Florida and Cuba: Five Centuries of Shared History and Culture” is part of Flagler College’s Ideas & Images series. \nJohnson suspects that some will find certain points of her research to be surprising. \n“One of the least known Cuban exile communities\, Marti City\, was in Ocala and had seven cigar factories – only Tampa and Jacksonville had more\,” she said. \nFlagler College’s Ideas & Images: Scholars and Artists-in-Residence program brings nationally and internationally-renowned experts to the campus\, building on a tradition established when Henry Flagler’s Hotel Ponce de Leon served as an inspiration for stories\, a haven for new ideas\, a canvas for artistic endeavors\, a showcase for new technology and a setting for athletic competitions. In its first decade\, nearly 100 scholars and artists have participated in the program. This year’s series was specially created for the 50th anniversary of Flagler College\, 1968-2018.  \nJohnson’s Oct. 25 presentation will be held in the Flagler Room of Ponce de Leon Hall\, located at 74 King Street\, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
