SUMMARY:Florals Month-By-Month Opening
DESCRIPTION:Local artist Jenna Alexander announces the unveiling of her latest art series\, Florals Month-by-Month\, with an opening from 11am to 2pm on Sunday\, March 1 at Gray 1908\, which is home to Jenna Alexander Studio and located at 73 San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine. “I’ve wanted to revisit a ‘birth series’ since my watercolor birthstones release in 2015\,” explained Jenna Alexander. “Illustrating birth month flowers seemed like a natural progression after exploring The Flower Map of the United States last year as well as my ongoing interest in botanicals.” \nFrom daffodils and daisies to poppies and paperwhites\, Alexander’s Florals Month-by-Month is an illustrated series that examines each birth flower in gouache on speckled antiquated paper. The Florals Month-by-Month illustration comes in 11×14 and 18×24 size\, while the individual month’s flowers are available in 8×10 size and single notecards.

SUMMARY:The United States Navy Band
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of St. Augustine Amphitheatre (FOSAA) present The United States Navy Band! \nAmerica’s Navy is coming to St. Augustine\, Florida\, one of only twenty cities in six states chosen to host a performance by the United States Navy Band during its 2020 tour — one of the signature outreach programs of the U.S. Navy! \nAs the original ensemble of the Navy Band\, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for more than 95 years. Joined by the Sea Chanters\, the official chorus of America’s Navy and the Cruisers popular music group\, the versatility of the ensemble expands to include music ranging from traditional wind band repertoire to Broadway showstoppers\, rhythm and blues\, pop and patriotic favorites. These elite ensembles combine their world-class talents to create a dynamic musical production sure to delight audiences of all ages. \nOne of the U.S. Navy Band’s primary responsibilities involves touring the country. All of the band’s primary performing units embark each year on concert tours throughout specified regions of the country\, allowing the band to reach out to audiences in areas of the country that do not have opportunities to see the Navy’s premier musical ensembles on a regular basis. The concerts are family-friendly events\, meant to be entertaining to veterans\, families\, individuals and those interested in joining the Navy. \n“For many years\, Navy bands have been where it matters\, when it matters\, just like the rest of our Navy. Today\, we have Sailors performing around the world\, improving relations with our allies abroad as well as telling the Navy story here at home.” –Capt. Kenneth Collins\, U.S. Navy Band commanding officer

SUMMARY:The Women
DESCRIPTION:‘The Women’ tells a story of struggle and strength for International Women’s Day\nSt. Augustine\, Fla. – The Flagler College Department of Visual and Performing Arts will\npresent Clare Boothe Luce’s “The Women” with performances starting March 4 in Flagler\nCollege’s Lewis Auditorium. \nSet in the 1930s\, the play tells the story of Mary Haines\, a New York City socialite\, who discovers\nher husband is having an affair. Mary must decide whether to feign ignorance and save her\nmarriage or divorce her husband and allow her rival to replace her. \nTrue to its name\, “The Women” is an entirely female cast. Although the script calls for 35\nspeaking parts\, the Theatre Arts department was able to cast 20 students\, with some playing as\nmany as four different parts. The play can be a challenge to produce\, due to its large cast and\nmany locations\, but Program Director for Theatre Arts\, Paul Denayer\, designed a set to\naccommodate the scope of the play. \n“The issues these women face are timeless\,” said Elaina Wahl-Temple\, resident artist and\ndirector of the show. “The script is full of strong women facing difficult challenges and rising to\nmeet them.” \nPresented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, “The Women” will run March 4-\n7 at 7:30 p.m. and March 8 at 2 p.m. All performances take place in the Lewis Auditorium at 14\nGranada Street.\n“It is wonderful timing that our run coincides with International Women’s Day\,” said Wahl Temple. “A fitting tribute to the ladies of the play as well as the playwright herself.” \nTickets are $15 for general admission and may be purchased online at tickets.flagler.edu or at\nthe Lewis Auditorium box office. Flagler faculty\, staff\, students and their immediate family\nmembers may obtain one free ticket directly from the box office. Non-Flagler students may\npurchase a discounted $5 ticket with their identification. During hours of operation\, the box\noffice can be reached at 904-826-8600

SUMMARY:Searle’s Sack and Encampment
DESCRIPTION:Searle’s Raid is an annual event that recreates the famous bloody pirate raid on St. Augustine in 1668\, takes place on the first Friday and Saturday of March. Join the Historic Florida Militia in the reenactment of the “1668 Sack of St. Augustine” in our nations’ oldest city. During the day\, a 17th century-style military encampment will be open to the public at the Colonial Quarter and will play host to military drills\, demonstrations\, and living history interpretation. The actual sacking and burning of the town will commence Saturday evening at 4:30pm. The specific route may vary. \nThe procession that commemorates the arrival of the raiding pirates and introduces this annual event will begin at the Colonial Quarter at 4:30pm and will proceed north on St. George Street to the Santo Domingo Redoubt on Orange Street. The Searle’s Sack encampment will take place on the first Saturday from 10am to 4pm at the Colonial Quarter. The reenactment of the battle between the freebooters and the city’s Spanish defenders will take place in St. Augustine’s historic district at 4:30pm on Saturday. The English brigade will head up St. George Street from the Plaza toward the city gates\, and the battle will commence when the English try to invade the Spanish defenders who will be stationed at the Santo Domingo Redoubt off Orange Street across from Potter’s Wax Museum. Living history gets real when living historians demonstrate how the Spanish settlers had to fight off Searle and his pirates. \nEvents in the historic district are free.

SUMMARY:Loving Beethoven Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, the world will celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday anniversary. The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach\, in partnership with MIMMA (Interactive Music Museum in Malaga\, Spain) is paying tribute to this milestone thanks to the traveling musical installation Loving Beethoven. After the visit to MIMMA\, Guzzo requested the collaboration with MIMMA to develop a program that will showcase music-related activities and host the exhibit in the United States at the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach. The interactive nature of the MIMMA exhibits\, with galleries full of musical instruments where the public is encouraged to touch and try\, is one of the traits the Cultural Center is looking to replicate during the exhibit in Florida. \n“Loving Beethoven ties together the Cultural Center’s mission and the Center’s outreach program Sound Connections® Music Therapy perfectly. We are thrilled to be working with Miguel Angel Piedrola and MIMMA on our first collaborative\, international project.”\n– Executive Director Donna Guzzo
