SUMMARY:Butterfield Garage Gallery October Featured Artist Nancy Hamblin Vogler Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Oct 5\, First Friday artwalk 6pm\nArtist Demo: Saturday\, Oct 6 at 2:00pm\nA diverse 2-dimensional artist\, St. Augustine artist Nancy Hamlin-Vogler works in her backyard studio\, near the Fountain of Youth. She began her greeting card company\, Eastern Sun Printworks while taking printmaking classes during graduate school\, where she earned an M.A. in French Literature. Infatuated with the silkscreen printing process\, she began designing greeting cards\, and printed each one by hand. Thirty five years later\, her iconic card images are sold in stores nationwide and sought after by greeting card aficionados. The images have been converted to digital format and are now professionally printed with archival pigmented inks. Her designs have received five Louie Finalist awards.\nNancy’s passion for contemporary art is evident in her more recent works on paper\, rendering still life\, figurative and landscape subjects in her signature intuitive\, observational\, gestural style\, where she uses her favorite materials: acrylics\, charcoal\, pastels and pasted rice paper elements. The abstracted content of her work reflects her worldwide backpacking travels\, summer vacations in Cape Cod and Maine\, and her studies in Buddhism.\nNancy recently received a Best of Show award in the Not So Still Life show. Her work can also be viewed at Plum Gallery\, 10 Aviles Street and on www.EasternSunPrintworks.com.

SUMMARY:Delbert McClinton
DESCRIPTION:There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love Delbert McClinton and those who haven’t heard him yet. Delbert is always working on that second group. Lyle Lovett has said\, “If we could all sing like we wanted to\, we’d all sing like Delbert.” \nThe multi-Grammy Award winning artist is at the top of his game with his 19th studio album\, Prick Of The Litter (Hot Shot Records/Thirty Tigers). The new offering captures the balance of soulful energy and restraint that the legendary performer has been delivering in his live performances for decades all over the world. On Prick of the Litter\, Delbert incorporates a variety of styles\, and as always\, just enough to keep him comfortably outside the traditional marketing categories. \nPrick Of The Litter blends Delbert’s signature rhythm and blues sound with a newer jazz-influence inspired by Johnny Mercer\, Nat King Cole and other legendary crooners. McClinton’s road band\, Self-Made Men provide a hard-driving rhythm section\, powerful guitars and innovative piano\, accented by punched-up horns. Delbert’s definitive vocals and distinct harmonica licks bring it all together. \nDelbert McClinton has been a leading Americana artist since before the genre was established. He has won two Grammy awards in the blues category for Best Contemporary Blues Album; and one in the rock category (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group)\, with Bonnie Raitt for “Good Man\, Good Woman”. Delbert’s unique musical style grew from his Texas music beginnings. Influenced at a young age by Tejano\, Western Swing\, Rhythm and Blues and War songs\, he developed a signature sound that served him well. \nIf you’ve seen a live Delbert McClinton show\, you will recognize the synchronized energy on Prick Of The Litter that comes from thousands of miles of playing together. Delbert feels that his current road band\, Self-Made Men\, is the best band he’s ever had. “Jack Bruno [drums] is amazing. He played with Joe Cocker and with Tina Turner for years. I’ve been harder on drummers than anybody in the world\, but Jack is right there where I need him. Dana Robbins [saxophone] and Quentin ‘Q’ Ware [trumpet] punctuate the live performances in just the right places. James Pennebaker [guitar] is family. He’s been playing with me off and on since he was nineteen. Mike Joyce [bass guitar]\, Kevin McKendree [piano]\, and Bob Britt [guitar] are among my best friends\, in addition to being in the band. Mike and Kevin and I write together a lot. We wrote most of the songs on this album together.” \n2017 was also a milestone year for Delbert. In addition to the release of Prick Of The Litter\, a biography is slated for release in September. He has also been nominated for Texas State Musician\, a highly acclaimed state appointment akin to poet laureate.

SUMMARY:Manon Sander at Lost Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Lost Art Gallery is excited to feature Plein Air painter Manon Sander at October’s First Friday Art Walk\, October 6\, from 5-9. The gallery will be exhibiting new images including local scenes recently painted on the streets of Saint Augustine. Join us to meet Manon and find that special painting that speaks to you! \nDuring years spent studying oil painting under the tutelage of nationally known oil painters\, Manon developed her own distinct style often described as “representational with an impressionistic touch.” Florida is a cornucopia of inspiration for this transplant from Germany. More important than the subject matter itself\, is Manon’s goal to capture the effects of light and fleeting momentary impressions. Because she expresses this through her use of interesting patterns\, luminous color\, and luscious brush strokes\, Manon continues to be accepted into exclusive painting events where she regularly receives awards and recognitions. \nUltimately\, Manon aims to communicate her joie de vivre through paintings that reflect the color\, light\, and joy Manon feels surrounded by and is ever so grateful for. Be the first to view her fantastic new works of St. Augustine at Lost Art Gallery at 210 St. George Street in Saint Augustine (south of the Plaza).

SUMMARY:Todd Snider with guest Rorey Carroll
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Todd Snider first garnered attention for his timely alt-rock satire “Talkin’ Seattle Grunge Rock Blues\,” a folk-rock song that struck a chord with younger people fed up with angry alternative rock bands\, and at the same time\, appealed to aging rockers who grew up with the folk revival of the 1960s. Snider was born in Portland\, Oregon\, and grew up in Santa Rosa\, Austin\, Houston\, and Atlanta. After moving to Memphis in the mid-’80s and establishing residency at a local club named the Daily Planet\, he was discovered by singer/songwriter Keith Sykes. Snider’s debut album\, Songs for the Daily Planet\, was released in the fall of 1994; “Talkin’ Seattle Grunge Rock Blues” was added to the album as an afterthought only after intense lobbying by a Canadian music critic\, and ultimately became a minor hit. \nOn his second effort\, 1996’s Step Right Up\, Snider and his band\, the Nervous Wrecks\, continued blending bluegrass\, blues\, folk-rock\, and country-rock to forge their own distinctive sound. On his third album\, 1998’s Viva Satellite\, Snider took a Tom Petty approach\, replacing much of his acoustic setup with twang-drenched electric guitar. In 2000\, he signed to John Prine’s Oh Boy label and returned to his singer/songwriter roots with Happy to Be Here. He recorded three more records\, 2002’s New Connection\, 2003’s Near Truths and Hotel Rooms Live\, and 2004’s East Nashville Skyline. That Was Me: The Best of Todd Snider 1994-1998 was released on Hip-O in 2005\, and the next year Snider’s eighth album\, Devil You Know\, came out. In 2008\, Snider released the politically charged Peace Queer\, an eight-song collection of anti-war songs as filtered through Snider’s signature wit and amiable pathos. The Excitement Plan appeared from Yep Roc Records in 2009. In 2011\, he released the two-disc concert set Live: The Storyteller\, while 2012 saw both a traditional studio outing\, Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables\, plus a tribute album\, Time as We Know It: The Songs of Jerry Jeff Walker. In 2013\, Snider formed the band Hard Working Americans\, and released two studio albums and a live set with the group between 2014 and 2016\, while also touring extensively. But Snider returned to his solo career in the fall of 2016\, releasing the album Eastside Bulldog in October of that year. \nMusicians often concoct necessary tales to capture the attention of the public. Rorey Carroll doesn’t need that – she’s lived it\, and carries the story of her life in every line she writes. Carroll was born in Chicago to a rather normal American family brought up as a typical\, middle class kid. This upbringing along with the fascination of alternative culture led her towards the great American love affair\, the counterbalance to the American Dream. At a very young age\, she lived in her car in cities all around the county\, hopped freight trains\, she even hiked the entire Appalachian Trail at age 20. She made money playing music to anyone who would listen\, from the subways of New York City to the streets of Ohio. She became a living paradox\, somewhere between running from the law and running from the normality of a Midwestern suburban lifestyle. The streets broke her down while another world picked her up. Bluegrass\, acoustic music\, anti-folk\, campfires in the heart of the humboldt trim scene\, in and out of trouble with the law – she inhaled the great spirit of rock and roll.
