Scott Nicol:\nAs “America’s premiere painter of books”\, Nicol uses books as the vehicle through which he expresses his emotions. Creating his art is a painstaking process of research\, intricate composition\, and detailed painting. So far\, Nicol has created over 50 paintings encompassing over 250 books. \nHis artwork is in galleries throughout the country and purchased by art collectors around the world. These paintings can touch people in a very deep and meaningful way and he finds it gratifying to receive compliments on the detail and realism. Nicol believes the true reward is in the process of making art. Taking a blank canvas and transforming it with oil paint and brush into books that not only tell the story of his life but of our collective popular culture.

SUMMARY:Butterfield Garage November Feature Artist and Handbag Designer Karen Victoria
DESCRIPTION:An Artist Conversation will be First Friday November 1\, at 6pm. Karen will engage in a lively free wheeling conversation to explain how and where her inspirations evolve from. \nKaren Victoria has spent decades devoted to personally designing and expertly crafting top tier handbags. She has displayed her creations at Butterfield Garage for almost 20 years.\nA long line of admirers regularly stop by Butterfield to see what new creations have arrived\, so they can add to their collections. Bags may be made from tapestries\, leather\, upcycled fur or whatever captures her imagination. Karen’s eye for materials\, and her perspective as as a designer is fed by a life full of adventures and changing directions. As you browse her creations\, you can almost hear the stories each bag has to tell. No two are alike\, yet they each have the uncompromising care and craftsmanship of a Karen Victoria made bag. \nOn First Friday expect Karen to share a few stories of her life as a free-spirited woman. (Hint: there are boats\, jousting and pirates involved). You will learn a little something about materials and craftsmanship that go into her handbags and have the chance to purchase one-of-a-kind bags that will be admired everywhere you go. \nKaren’s sewing skills have been honed since childhood\, when at 7 she was allowed to use her mom’s treadle sewing machine. Expert sewing knowledge has served her over the years; she has done custom leather work\, sails and canvas work\, eventually leading her to creating custom purses. The inspiration for uniquely made handbags began with designing bags for medieval festivals\, ornate tapestry purses with velvet\, fringe and tassels. As she began showing in Art & Craft shows her designs shifted to appeal to a more contemporary customer\, which leads to the handbags hanging in Butterfield Garage today.

SUMMARY:The Old Man and the Old Moon
DESCRIPTION:The Flagler College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents Pig Pen Theatre Co.’s “The Old Man and the Old Moon” with performances starting Nov. 14 in Flagler College’s Lewis Auditorium. \nThe song-filled story unfolds with an old man whose job is to refill the moon each night with liquid light.  Years of monotony have erased his memory as to how this job began\, and when his wife feels a tug to explore\, the old man is faced with the decision to follow his wife or stay and do his job. \nActor Zachary Racine said\, “We tell the story in a really interesting way…we want the audience to know we are actors telling this story to you.” \nThe production includes only a handful of actors who take on various roles throughout the play. The various roles each actor plays dictates a wide variety of new talents the actors had to embrace and work in great detail\, such as working with dialects\, learning puppetry\, and playing a musical instrument. \n“We’ve had a dialect coach come in and she’s been amazing\,” said Walker Mullin of the show’s cast. “I’ve always loved doing different accents and things like that and now being able to do it in front of people is very cool.” \nPerformances are Nov. 14\, 15\, 16 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. The performances on Nov. 17\, 23 and 24 will take place at 2 p.m. All performances are in the Lewis Auditorium\, 14 Granada Street\, downtown St. Augustine. \nTickets are $15 for general admission and may be purchased online at tickets.flagler.edu.  Non-Flagler Student tickets are $5 with ID at the box office. Flagler faculty\, staff\, students and their immediate family members may obtain free tickets at the Lewis Auditorium box office with ID. The box office will open on Nov. 11\, with hours of Monday through Friday 12-5 p.m. and 1 hour prior to curtain. During hours of operation\, the box office can be reached at 904-826-8600.
