SUMMARY:Midnight in the Garden of Indigo Batik Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson’s indigo batiks are featured in February at Butterfield Garage Gallery\nFriday February 7\, 2020\, at 6:00pm Cindy will present an artist talk explaining her process\, and experiences of working with indigo. \nThe show\, titled Midnight in the Garden of Indigo results from Cindy’s focus in 2019 learning to use indigo dye for batiks. The infinite shades of blue\, and the extreme lightfastness of indigo intrigued her\, and indigo research and dye vats soon took over her studio. Dying with indigo requires both science and art. The results are batiks that have an other worldly feel\, a haunting stillness\, and though the images are beautiful\, they reveal an incomplete visual story. These monochromatic images will encourage the viewer to see the familiar in a new light as well. \nCindy’s batiks are known for the high level of detail and painterly quality she is able to express with the medium. A long background of drawing has guided her work. Cindy uses a tjanting tool from Indonesia to apply hot wax much in the same way as an artist uses a quill to lay down ink. Layer by layer the liquid wax seals the color she wants to preserve\, before the next dye is applied. Her process of building colors directly on the fabric is unique\, and creates the depth of color seen in her batiks. “Balancing the technical process while keeping a feel of spontaneity is my overall focus as I work on a piece” Cindy explains.\nDuring the past five years\, Cindy’s work has caught the attention of both jurists and collectors. She has been included in numerous regional shows and her batiks grace the homes of many collectors around the country. She teaches her technique in classes at The Bascom Center for the Arts in Highlands NC\, as well as locally. \nA short history of indigo and its role in St. Augustines past\, plus A hands on demonstration of batik and the indigo dying process will be presented Saturday Feb 22\, at Butterfield Gallery.

SUMMARY:Jacksonville Children’s Chorus Mardi Gras Party
DESCRIPTION:Krewe Kaptain tickets include reserved table seating with table service\, parking  and champagne/wine (only ages 21+ up) \nJacksonville Children’s Chorus (JCC) partners with local businesses and music groups to host a Mardi Gras Party to benefit the JCC. I am excited to bring this fun and eclectic party back to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall to celebrate our 25th Anniversary season. This event is not only on its way to becoming the area’s largest Mardi Gras party\, but it goes to support the hundreds of local children that benefit from our programming every year\, so I hope that the community joins us in celebrating and Laissez les bon temps rouler!” \nThe Jacksonville Children’s Chorus was founded in 1995 by then Jacksonville University President\, Dr. Francis B. Kinne to fill a need for a children’s music program in Northeast Florida. Since its inception\, the group has grown from 16 voices to serving nearly 1\,000 young singers every year. Because music education is crucial to a child’s development\, the JCC offers partial or full scholarship to any child who wishes to sing\, regardless of the family’s ability to pay. The scholarship program is funded solely through donations and ensures diversity in membership. The JCC has developed into one of Jacksonville’s most important providers of music education\, enriching the lives of singers and audiences across the region.
