SUMMARY:Painter Martha Ferguson is Butterfield Gallery’s featured artist in April
DESCRIPTION:Martha’s Her well loved interpretations of St. Augustine are awash with light and color. Martha will be in the gallery from 11am-6pm on First Friday\, April 2\, to talk about her work and painting style. \nMartha’s style is impressionistic and she paint primarily in oil and watercolor. She loves to paint old gritty towns\, capturing the feel of the area and the locals that walk the quaint streets\, and is drawn to architecture and the way the light comes through the subject. “I want my paintings to be more than a likeness but an experience or a nostalgic feel. I can walk by the same scene many times and then all of a sudden there is a moment that tells a story. That’s what I seek to capture\, that’s when the painting is successful. Painting is a journey that provides me with a determination to learn\, create and master my technique\, while keeping my own sense of style.” \nOver the last few years Martha has become passionate about plein air painting. You may have spotted her around town\, with brush and paints in hand. She works on small studies out in the open air\, many of which later become larger paintings that she paints in the studio. Examples of both are displayed in the gallery. Her paintings regularly win local and national awards\, (In 2020 alone she won five)\, and Martha’s paintings of old town St. Augustine have become popular collector pieces for visitors and locals alike. \nMartha Ferguson holds a BA Fine in Art from Flagler College and in addition\, studied watercolor and print making at the University of Charleston and continued studies at The Art Student League of New York and various master artists workshops. She credits Emmet Fritz\, a local painting legend whom she often encountered painting the scenes of St. Augustine during her college years at Flagler. It was in those days she fell in love with painting.\nMartha has crafted a distinct style of painting that is instantly recognizable\, and seem to dance with a liveliness you must see to appreciate.

The St. Augustine Art Association invites you to participate in the community-wide 5th Annual St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out in the nation’s oldest city\, happening April 22-25\, 2021. \nThis event\, a nod to St. Augustine’s art history\, celebrates the town’s architectural and coastal beauty through the time-honored tradition of painting en plein air. In coordination with the Lightner Museum\, Plein Air artists will be painting locations found in the artwork from their exhibit\, St. Augustine in a New Light: American Impressionism from the Collection of the Lightner Museum\, which opens April 8. For a complete list of locations to find the artists painting\, visit staaa.org/pleinair. \nThroughout the Paint Out\, works-in-progress and finished works will be on display and for sale in the St. Augustine Art Association Wet Room. Tickets for the Florida Chamber Music Project performances will go on sale today\, Thursday\, April 1 at 12:00pm online at Ticketmaster.com. Please note\, Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Box Office remains closed at this time. \nCurrently in their eighth season\, the Florida Chamber Music Project will perform works by Piotr Szewczyk and Edvard Grieg on April 25 at 3pm\, celebrating Contemporary Classical and Music of the Romantic Era. On Sunday\, May 23 at 3pm\, FCMP presents Mozart Prokofiev and Bartok\, celebrating music of the Masters and Romanian Folk Dances. \n“We are pleased to be able to perform again at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall\,” said Pardue. “These difficult times make music even more important.” \nThe Florida Chamber Music Project provides live classical music in an intimate chamber music setting for residents of St. Johns County\, St. Augustine\, Clay County and the surrounding areas of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.
