SUMMARY:Butterfield Garage December Artist of the Month; Painter Sam Kates
DESCRIPTION:An Artist Talk\, First Friday December 7th at 6pm. is an opportunity to meet the artist hear the behind-the-scenes view of his inspiration and processes \nSam Kates is a painter of coastal scenes reminiscent of old Florida. He describes his current style and techniques as “painterly realism\,” full of detail to document his subjects but very dependent on light and shadows that give his works extraordinary depth and definition. While his pictures are composed on site and reflect actual scenes and boats\, the paintings are created in the studio at his home in St. Augustine\, FL. \nSam retired in 2002 after over three decades as a director of history\, natural science and fine art museums and institutions in Florida\, Tennessee and Alabama. While he is still called upon to jury and judge art shows and festivals\, most of his time is now spent in the studio painting coastal scenes that are reminiscent of the old Florida that was still prevalent during the 1940-50’s when he was a child. He fondly remembers spending summers with his grandparents in New Smyrna Beach where huge sand dunes still exist and fleets of shrimp boats crowded the local docks. \nSketching trips to Cedar Key in 1957 inspired his first paintings of working boats and shorelines.\nHe has been an exhibiting member of The Butterfield Garage Gallery artist co-op for the past ten years and has also shown his paintings at other numerous venues\, galleries and Art Festivals throughout the state. Sam was born in Orlando\, Florida in 1940 and grew up in Gainesville. He is an alumnus of Florida State University.

SUMMARY:Apex Theatre Studio presents “A Christmas Story”
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the holidays with hilarity and Apex Theatre Studio this December when Apex Theatre Studio will present “A Christmas Story\,” a full-length comedy based on the beloved film at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. \nHumorist Jean Sheperd’s memoir of growing up in the mid-west of the 1940s follows Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. All the elements from the classic motion picture are here: the exploding furnace\, the school bully\, the boys experiment with a wet tongue on a lamppost and the infamous leg lamp. The Orlando Sentinel exclaims “Classics bloom quickly in modern times… you don’t have to have grown up with 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his ache for an air rifle under the tree to think of ‘A Christmas Story’ as a Christmas must. And [this] version is just as kindly and just as cockeyed as ‘A Christmas Story’ is meant to be.” \nThe production is under the direction of Ian Mairs\, managing director of Apex Theatre Studio and features a combination of faculty\, students\, and guest artists from the Northeast Florida area. Reserved seating tickets are $25.00 and will be available online and at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and St. Augustine Amphitheatre Box Offices. \nNow in its fifth year\, Apex Theatre Studio (a non-profit training center with 501c3 status) fosters young artists who possess a passion and curiosity for acting\, singing\, dancing and stagecraft through a series of master classes\, intensives\, readings\, and theatrical presentations.  For more information on Apex Theatre Studio visit apextheatrejax.com.
