SUMMARY:Butterfield Garage Gallery March Feature Artist is Jan Miller\, Founder of the Gallery.
DESCRIPTION:An Artist Talk\, First Friday March 1st\, at 6pm is an opportunity to hear Jan speak of her long storied career in the arts\, and see some of her newest works of whimsy.\nJan seamlessly combines leadership qualities with nurturing her own creative Art Spirit. While much of her early career was spent creating beautifully composed and rendered acrylic still life’s\, Jan’s current work is filled with playfulness. She has won many awards\, and her works hang in museums and corporate collections throughout the United States. Jan has also been an instrumental member of the arts community in St. Augustine. She was one of several artists who initiated First Friday Art Walks in St. Augustine\, served in leadership positions with Art Galleries of St. Augustine (AGOSA)\, The Florida Artists Group\, (a statewide professional artists organization) and is a recipient of the St. Johns Cultural Council’s ROWITA Award for her contributions to the arts in St. Augustine.\nShe says “I have worked to promote and nurture the amazingly talented and diverse art scene in St. Augustine by offering exhibition space to many of our most prominent artists and to network with other galleries in order to keep it vibrant\, and to bring new and upcoming artists to the public.”\nimage: “Homage to Picasso” acrylic painted gourd by Jan Miller

SUMMARY:The Giver
DESCRIPTION:Flagler College’s Theatre Arts students will perform a Theater for Young Adults classic coming of age story from the Lois Lowry novel\, “The Giver.” The production will be shown from April 10 to 13 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m. in the Lewis Auditorium at 14 Granada Street. It is directed by Visiting Assistant Professor Leah Page. \n“The Giver” is a coming-of-age story where the main character\, Jonas\, comes to realize the life he has known is not what he thought it was; it’s intended for young adult audiences. However\, because of the complexities of adolescence and growing up\, this story is one that can be enjoyed by all. \nPage highlighted the process of bringing the production from beloved novel to stage\, focusing on her decision to cast a female Giver in such an archetypal role: she strove to juxtapose the “Giver” character’s sincerity and support against the other adult female characters who may be seen as cold and distant. Page also spoke of her goal to focus on the evolution of the relationship between the Giver and Jonas. \nShe also foresees theater for young adults becoming more commonplace in a typical Flagler theater season\, even if only every other year. In particular\, Page said that students were naturally excited to work on this show\, as it was widely read throughout middle schools across the country. \nThe book is a 1994 Newbery award winner and also adapted for the screen in the film of the same name starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. \nThe show is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock\, Ill. Tickets are $15 general admission\, available online at tickets.flagler.edu. Tickets may also be purchased directly at the box office beginning April 8\, Monday through Friday\, 12-5 p.m.\, and one hour prior to curtain. Flagler faculty\, staff\, their immediate family\, and Flagler students\, may obtain one free ticket directly from the box office. Non-Flagler students may purchase a discounted $5 ticket with their identification.
