DESCRIPTION:Get your paddles and boats ready to set sail on this four-day event in one of America’s oldest seaport cities. This event will feature live music\, food and a variety of sailing and boat events along the St. Augustine Bayfront and near Vilano bridge. This event raises funds to send underprivileged children to sailing camps every summer as part of their JDM Youth Sailing Scholarship Fund\, named in honor of a strong supporter of Race Week\, John Meehan. All social events will be held at the St. Augustine Yacht Club.

DESCRIPTION:An Artist Talk\, First Friday March 1st\, at 6pm is an opportunity to hear Jan speak of her long storied career in the arts\, and see some of her newest works of whimsy.\nJan seamlessly combines leadership qualities with nurturing her own creative Art Spirit. While much of her early career was spent creating beautifully composed and rendered acrylic still life’s\, Jan’s current work is filled with playfulness. Characters created out of gourds\, imaginative hanging characters\, all with the skill of a master painter.\nJan has been an exhibiting artist for over 45 years. She has won many awards\, and her works hang in museums and corporate collections throughout the United States. Jan has also been an instrumental member of the arts community in St. Augustine. SUMMARY:Hasan Kwame Jeffries on “American Amnesia”
DESCRIPTION:On March 28 at 6 p.m. in the Flagler Room on Flagler College’s campus\, Hasan Kwame Jeffries\, Ph.D.\, associate professor at The Ohio State University\, will present to the public “American Amnesia: Why We Hate History and Love Nostalgia.” The event is free. \n“We have been miseducating our students to a criminal extent\,” said Jeffries. \nHe has his bachelor’s in history from Morehouse College and his master’s in American history from Duke University. He also completed his doctoral studies in American history with a concentration in African-American history at Duke University. \nJeffries serves as a guest speaker at various conferences\, on tv programs and in the media as he is considered a topic expert in African-American history and contemporary black politics. He has completed many fellowships including a Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship. \n“We’re not helping students understand the world in which we live\,” he said. He is expected to stress the importance of teaching students how to navigate today’s issues and understand their place in society’s progression forward. \nHis publications include “Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt” and “Stealing Home: Ebbets Field and Black Working Class Life in Post-Civil Rights New York\,” which is a work in progress. \nJeffries is visiting Flagler College at the invitation of the Office of Academic Affairs\, through Kenan Distinguished Professor of History Michael Butler\, Ph.D. \nThis speaking engagement is free and open to the public\, but seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis.
